The Thule Side Kick is the smallest rooftop cargo box that Thule makes. This clamshell style box’s shape and size make it perfect for carrying golf clubs and camping gear without monopolizing your roof space. The Side Kick is made of impact resistant polyurethane, and keeps your gear safe and secure with the included locks. The Side Kick will mount to almost any rack system, be it Thule, Yakima, or factory.
Great for some additional space
I bought this for a 4,600 mile road/camping trip with my 06 Pontiac Vibe. It worked great, and kept everything dry during several days of rain. I did have to drill a couple new mounting holes to move the cargo box far enough forward so I could still open the rear hatch. To give you an idea of size, I was able to fit three milk crates with some room to sparePros – Small, does not effect the car other than maybe lowering my MPG by 1 or 2 miles – Keeps everything dry – Great to have extra space for camping gear, or whateverCons – Small, couldn’t fit everything I hoped – Assembly was a challenge because of the placement of the hinges – Feels flimsy, though once locked, even without a strap, I didn’t have any issues, even at 80mph
Safe, secure, and convenient
As our three kids are now much older, we recently downgraded from a minivan to a midsize SUV with third row seating. While it’s great for zipping around town, road trips mean that it gets a bit cramped with all our belongings. Ahead of our recent trip to DC, we purchased an “open box” of this model to save a few dollars. An initial inspection of the product revealed no obvious dents or scratches, which was good. Initial assembling and installation was a bit tricky, but everything came together easily in the end. There was room for two small suitcases as well as some softer bags and a few other “needs,” and now there was more than enough space inside the vehicle for people AND the rest of our paraphernalia. The unit also comes with two locks to help keep your belongings secure. Traveling at highway speeds was no problem; everything stayed in place and there was no additional road noise. Upon reaching our destination, which included passing through some wet weather, everything inside the unit was dry and still in its original position. In summary, I’m very happy with this product and we see this getting a lot of use this summer visiting family and friends.
I’ve used one of these for years and just ordered another one from Amazon.com for my daughter. It is light weight and very easy to install. In both cases I used the cargo bars from the car manufacturer.Be aware that this carrier is tall and not very long. It is designed for duffel bags, backpacks, etc, and not for long items like skis. While the height provides usable volume, it makes an SUV too tall to use in many parking structures. For example, the total height of a 2006 KIA Sportage with this box installed is 7 feet. Having said this, it is capable of swallowing a huge amount of cargo.Unlike the latches on other cargo boxes, the latches on this box require a key to use. In other words, the box cannot be latched without a key. This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
Good bang for the buck
Let’s get the only con out of the way with this roof top carrier- putting it together is a pain BUT having an extra set of hands to help you will make it a breeze. This is an ideal carrier for a small vehicle think fit , fiesta , focus , civic , golf , gti . I took it on a camping trip and easily fit lots of gear and kept it dry through some hard rain. I did have to drill mounting holes in the back but that is easily done .
NEEDS better LOCKS!!! They are cheaply made and don’t align well at all.
It does the job and holds a good amount of gear. Only issue is that it’s very flimsy and thin. When I filled it up the locks wouldn’t line up to lock to save my life. I have to remove and install the locks a few times because the instructions showed them installed incorrectly. So after a huge headache and almost leaving late for my big trip I got the locks to kinda latch but still didn’t trust them at 80mph to hold my stuff so I put a ratchet strap around it. Only issue is that the lid now is bowed inward from the force of the strap. But it was worth knowing that the box wasn’t going to open on me.
CHEAP REQUESTED REFUND IMMEDIATELY
The shipping box arrived unscathed. Everything looked brand new as it should. Then during assembly, I noticed two holes weren’t drilled out. So simple fix right? I finished putting it together and wondered why it would not open/close too well. I noticed a rivet missing and found it in the box. It’s not that I can’t fix it but for this price ehhh it should be a quality product. Doesn’t secure well and water will get in. Just got this thing like 2 hours ago. Already requested a refund. First and final Thule product. In the pictures I have the side with the rivet missing and the other with them secured.
